Truth-Not-Trickery: Homosexuality and the Bible

For years, Kindness Calloway struggled with reconciling faith and sexuality. Raised in the church with a mother who was an ordained minister, Kindness was told that homosexuality was deeply sinful and could never be accepted by God. This sparked an internal conflict, a journey of spiritual exploration and desire to seek the truth about God’s word.

Kindness started the blog  Truth-Not-Trickery over 15 years ago to have a place to write out the Understandings that the Spirit was guiding Kindness to seek out and understand.  The harmful messages received in the church where not God, and Kindness felt led to share the insights gained from listening to the Spirit of God with everyone.

The title “Truth-Not-Trickery” comes from a deep belief that the Bible has often been misused to control, shame, and condemn, when it was meant to uplift and heal. Through this work, Kindness offered a safe space for others who were also struggling, helping them understand that God’s love is unconditional and not dependent on one’s sexual identity.

Though Kindness has moved beyond arguing with family or others about the Bible’s stance on homosexuality, the need for this message remains. There are still people—particularly young individuals—wrestling with rejection, fear, and confusion about their faith and sexuality. For these individuals, Truth-Not-Trickery serves as a beacon of love and hope, showing that they are not alone and that God’s love is for them, no matter who they are or who they love.

This belief is central to Kindness’s work, including the Loving Kindness Everyday podcast and involvement in the film 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture. The film reveals how a mistranslation of the Bible’s verses on homosexuality has contributed to the marginalization of the LGBTQ+ community. Kindness first discovered the movie 1946 through following Kathy Baldock’s inspiring work on Instagram. This connection eventually led to meeting Sharron “Rocky” Roggio, the brilliant creator of the film, and building a friendship. Kindness has been deeply honored to support the project as a sponsor. Through heartfelt conversations with Rocky and the exchange of their shared stories, Kindness came to understand that 1946 the movie transcends being just a film—it is a divine project, a labor of love, opening hearts and minds to embrace the true message of God’s unconditional love.

The Journey and the Message

The journey that Kindness Calloway has taken is one of embracing the truth that God’s love is unconditional. God doesn’t condemn anyone for being gay, and Kindness firmly believes that embracing one’s true self is part of the divine purpose. This message is woven into every aspect of Kindness’s work—whether it’s through the podcast, the blog, or in conversations that challenge outdated beliefs.

Kindness stands together with Rocky Roggio and advocates for inclusivity, love, and acceptance. They believe that the church should not be a place of shame, but one where everyone is welcomed to experience God’s unconditional love. Kindness’s story and work are proof that there is always room for healing, transformation, and acceptance in God’s embrace.
